English 11 Syllabus
My Expectations
These are my expectations for 11th grade students in my class:
1. They know how to behave in a classroom: Follow directions as given; Treat each other respectfully; Bring supplies to class (English notebook, Chromebook (charger if needed); SSR book; Class book; Writing Utensil.
2. They recognize their responsibilities as a student: If they are not willing to do the work that the class is doing, they will be sent to the office for insubordination (see the "CHECK, CHOICE protocol in the syllabus).
3. They ask questions if they don't understand; I do not know that a student needs extra help understanding directions unless they ask questions.
4. They pay attention to the lesson; If a student chooses NOT to pay attention during the lesson I offer, I will not repeat the lesson for him/her.
5. They recognize that anything they miss while out of class (on a pass or due to absence) is their own responsibility; I will not pause the rest of my class (25+ other people) to repeat a lesson for students who have chosen to leave class on a pass or are absent from class. I post a daily summary of what the class completed each day on Google Classroom.
6. They complete assignments; if a student has chosen not to complete an assignment given, they must sign up for my seminar time in order to submit it late. I will not take late work any other time. I give plenty of time to complete assignments, so if it is not complete, it was their own choice to use their time for something else.
7. They respect deadlines; if a student misses a monthly late-work deadline, they recognize that their option to turn in a late assignment is gone. The grade remains a zero. Deadlines for missing assignments are on the last day of the month in which it is assigned (There is a grace period for those months that overlap within the same week).
8. They respect rules in the spirit of the rule. IE: I will accept incomplete assignments if the assignment has been truly attempted but not completed; if a student has simply written some word on the paper with no clear effort to actually attempt the assignment, it will be consider missing/zero.
9. They recognize the basic human decencies: functioning in a classroom includes respecting their actions' effect on their classmates. IE: Interrupting a lesson in order to get up and go ask a friend a question or get up and try to turn in a corrected assignment is not appropriate because there are 29 other people trying to learn at that moment.
10. They are potty-trained: they do not interrupt a lesson to ask to go to the bathroom; they hold it until the lesson is completed and take their bathroom pass during independent work time as not to waste other people's learning time.
