Michigan-Japan Exchange Program Cultivates Cultural Understanding

In late June, Eryn Schell left her small community along the Thornapple River to live in Shiga Prefecture, Japan for nearly three weeks. Eryn traveled nearly 24 hours with a cohort of peers from the Michigan-Shiga High School Exchange Program -- an arm of the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU.)

An eerie quiet fell over a crowd gathered for the first Barry County Patriot Day Ceremony as everyone listened to the sound of airplane engines fly over Middleville – four planes from the Hastings Fly Club simulating the four planes used in the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks on America. “Remember one thing from this. Remember this day. Never forget,” said Charlie Pullen as he paused briefly to keep his emotions in check as he spoke to the crowd gathered at Middleville's Sesquicentennial Park Sept. 11.

Donning gloves and boots, and with shovels and rakes in hand, TKHS students tackled cleanup projects in the village of Middleville as part of the Barry County United Way Day of Caring.

Thornapple Kellogg Schools will celebrate homecoming week next week culminating in the Friday night homecoming parade, tailgate festivities and parade.

When Kenzee and Addy Knight talk about what they did this summer, they'll most certainly include their experience competing at the 2017 State Games of America in Grand Rapids. The girls not only competed but came home with their first State Games medals.

Thornapple Kellogg's Class of 2017 was challenged by speakers to push themselves, get involved and try new things and most of all - live life to the fullest every day.
