It's amazing what high school kids can do with a little wood and some tools. Several Thornapple Kellogg High School students received honors and awards in the annual Michigan Industrial and Technology Education Society competition covering woodworking, engineering, drafting and architectural projects from high school students throughout the state.

What happens when three Thornapple Kellogg teams meet with teams from all over the world in Iowa? They enjoy a great time and a cultural experience like none other while representing their school district very well.

Several scholarships, academic and athletic awards were handed out to Thornapple Kellogg seniors at the honors night program recently. TK students are very fortunate to have a number of scholarships awarded through Thornapple Area Enrichment Foundation, which gave out nearly $40,000 in awards to TK students. TK seniors received numerous other scholarships from outside TAEF as well and were honored for their various achievements during high school.

The Thornapple Kellogg High School Class of 2018 started its senior year celebrating the homecoming dance in the football stadium due to unusually hot weather. Appropriately, the weather also determined their final celebration would be in the same stadium Thursday night. The 227 graduating members of the class were reminded by senior Liz Cutlip that wherever they go, their actions matter and will make a difference.

Sometimes a game is about much more than the number of hits or runs scored. Sometimes everyone is a winner. The Thornapple Kellogg Junior Varsity softball team had a game like that last week when they teamed up with Forest Hills Eastern to "Strike Out Cancer."

The senior members of the TKHS concert, symphonic and jazz bands were recognized at their last concerts of the year this week and special recognition given to four students.

Congratulations to the recently named academic Top 10 students in the Class of 2018. Those students are (in alphabetical order) Chloe Adams, Adam Johanson, Cass Kramer, Megan Logan, Sam Ogrodzinski, Maddisen Robirds, Tess Scheidel, Emma Shea, Breann Stahl, and Brianna Vanderstelt.

Thornapple Kellogg High School girl’s robotics team got a boost from Challenge Manufacturing with a $1,000 sponsorship. The Walker-based company sent engineers to give TK students pointers and a helping hand last year and presented the girl’s team with a $1,000 sponsorship check for the Vex Robotics competition season.

Children having to spend time at DeVos Children's Hospital will have some very special and very colorful new puzzles to keep them entertained thanks to a couple of Thornapple Kellogg High School woodworking students.

Mike Blair let out a gut-wrenching cry. His wife dropped to her knees beside their daughter Alexandra who was lying lifeless on the roadway just beyond two wrecked cars. Firefighters, EMTs and police bustled about trying to help crash victims and assess injuries. Although it looked and felt very real, it was all part of a mock crash scene at Thornapple Kellogg High School Friday afternoon. The mock event is put on every other year as a very vivid and emotional reminder to students of the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving and distracted driving.
