The 10th annual Thornapple Kellogg High School and community Veterans Day message had to be delivered in a different way this year, but the message was still the same – thank you to all veterans. Because of COVID-19, the gymnasium couldn’t be filled with students, community members and veterans Instead, the dedication and recognition had to be done via video production. Still, the heartfelt thanks and appreciation for those who served came through loud and clear as high school students all watched this video from their classrooms Wednesday morning.

Thornapple Kellogg High School senior Caedon Zube was selected for the College Board National Rural and Small Town Recognition Program. He earned the honor because of his high academic achievements and his performance on the PSAT.

With limited audiences, TKHS theater students are ready to perform the fall play “Little Women” Nov. 6 and 7. Senior cast and crew members are excited to be able to perform, but admit it’s a little bittersweet knowing the experience isn’t the same.

The TKHS Homecoming King and Queen were crowned in front of the bright lights of the MiTK News studio as every classroom in the high school tuned in to watch the live stream production. Cheers echoed through the hallway as Lila Nelson and Jackson LaJoye donned their crowns.

TKHS Student Council is getting creative this year and thinking outside the box to come up with a week of celebration. Rather than a homecoming week this year the TKHS students will enjoy “Halloweek.” Some activities will be the same as a traditional homecoming week including crowning of the homecoming king and queen and naming of the court, a virtual student assembly, and special dress up days.

Lane three in the swimming pool was left empty during Thursday night’s 100-yard breaststroke event at the DK-TK-Hastings vs. Wayland swim meet. It would have been Lydia Cole’s lane and the breaststroke was her specialty. Lydia, a Thornapple Kellogg High School junior, died in January 2020 after being diagnosed with cancer in May 2019.

Members of the TKHS Equestrian team placed third in the state finals at Midland the past weekend. This is the first time in many years the team has advanced to the state level. Congratulations to the team and representing TK!

From the time they entered high school, high school English teacher Tricia Rickert said the Class of 2020 had a reputation as a class that wanted to do things their own way. They certainly did that in a big way Thursday night (July 16) celebrating their graduation with the first-ever TK drive-in graduation ceremony.
