Thornapple Kellogg High School was named as a 2020 Best High School in the nation based on rankings published today by the U.S. News and World Report. To be included in the Best High Schools list, schools had to be ranked in the top 40 percent of all high schools in the country.

For months Thornapple Kellogg High School students have been rehearsing and preparing for their upcoming spring musical, “Once Upon a Mattress.” The show is based on the famous fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea.” Performances are at 7 p.m. March 5, 6 and 7. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults.

Thornapple Kellogg Schools were well represented with 11 teams at the regional Odyssey of the Mind competition in Wayland last weekend. The district will again be well represented by six teams advancing to the state finals March 14 hosted at TK Schools.

Philanthropy isn’t a word most fifth-graders use often. But it is a word they fully understand now and have practiced themselves with the help of the Circle of Giving project through the Barry Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council. “Philanthropy is giving people your time, talents and treasures to help other people,” said fifth-grader Collyn Genther.

How much does it cost to rent an apartment? Do I need a roommate? How much can I afford to spend on a new vehicle? Or maybe I just need a good used vehicle? How do I save money for the future?

Eight Thornapple Kellogg High School art students earned nine Scholastic Art awards. Samantha Barton earned gold in printmaking and silver in ceramics; Grace Densham - gold in sculpture; McKenzie Cooper - silver in photography; Abbie Numeric - silver in photography; Anna Timm - silver in printmaking; Julianna VanMeter - silver in painting; Audrey Johnson - honorable mention in photography; and Anna Miller - honorable mention in drawing/illustration.

Thornapple Kellogg High School will be well represented at the BPA State Finals in Grand Rapids March 20-22. The high school had 12 students attend the regional contest at Davenport University in January with eight students advancing to the state contest in 12 categories.

Give high school students a block of wood and watch them turn it into unique and personalized crayon holders for elementary teachers. Thornapple Kellogg High School woods students did just that and the results were impressive and much appreciated by teachers.

Thornapple Kellogg High School art students were able to capture delicate details in their drawings of skeletons with the help of a life-like skeleton model. The model was purchased by art teacher Tonya Woods thanks to a grant from the Thornapple Area Enrichment Foundation. The skeleton enables students to have an anatomically-correct model for referencing how the bones are all connected, their shapes and positioning. They also can visually inspect how the joints are formed and move.
